The aircraft brakes are the parts that have to absorb all the energy of stopping the aircraft. As the aircraft is getting heavier, the amount of kinetic energy is bigger and these energy have to be converted to heat. Thus the brake can get very hot. To overcome the heat, a special brake fans are installed in the axles. These fans operate when the temperature exceed a certain level.

Middle-Eastern carrier Saudi Arabian Airlines has selected Goodrich to provide wheels and carbon brakes for the airline’s fleet of 12 Boeing 777-300ERs.

Under the agreement, Goodrich will supply the carrier with Duracarb proprietary braking systems, which offer a 35% brake life advantage compared with the competition, said the manufacturer.

Saudi Arabian’s first 777-300ER is scheduled for delivery in January 2012, added Goodrich.

The deal complements the airline’s Goodrich-equipped fleet of 747-400s and 777-200s.
