Electronic Flight Information System (EFIS)

  • Electronic Flight Management System interacts with Flight Management System to provide outputs on a plasma display.
  • EFIS consists of Electronic Horizontal Situation Indicator, Electronic Attitude Direction Indicator, Control Panel, Symbol Generator and the Remote Light Sensor

Colour Coding in EFIS

  • Red, Yellow, Green, Blue Magenta and Green colours are used in airbus aircrafts
  • Red indicates Warnings, Flight Envelopes and System Limits while Yellow is used for Cautions and Abnormal Sources
  • Green is used for indicating Selected Mode and Blue is used for sky colouring
  • Magenta is used for Deviation Pointers and Green or Magenta is used for flight Director Bars
  • EFIS Symbols used include those for VORTAC – VOR – DME – NDB, Airports, off-route, active and other Way Points
  • Wind Directions, Selected Runway and Extended Centre-line are also indicated in EFIS

VOR, ILS, Map and Plan Display Modes of EHSI

  • VOR mode displays VOR on the full compass rose while ILS mode displays ILS on the full compass rose
  • Map mode displays a Moving Map Display along with TCAS, EGPWS and Weather Radar inputs
  • Plan mode displays a static map for re-planning routes in air

Centre Map and Expanded VOR or ILS Display Modes of EHSI

  • Expanded VOR displays VOR information in 90° of compass along with weather radar information
  • Expanded ILS displays ILS information in 90° of compass with weather radar information
  • Centre Map displays a moving map with aircraft in the centre of the screen

Failure Warnings in EHSI

  • Failure annunciators warn about failure of data sources like Heading, VOR, ILS Localiser or Glide-path
  • Weak signals on weather radar are also indicated in EFIS
  • Mis-match in inputs from different sources are also indicated in EFIS
