Ground Based Radar

Ground Radar

Types of Primary Ground Radars

  • Ground based Primary Radars are used in Air Traffic Control
  • Area Surveillance Radar (RSR)
  • En-route Surveillance Radar (Same as RSR)
  • Terminal Surveillance Radar (TSR)
  • Aerodrome Surveillance Radar (ASR)
  • Precision Surveillance Radar (PAR)
  • Aerodrome Surveillance Detection Equipment (ADSE)
  • Airport Surface Movement Radar (Same as ASDE)

Area (En-route) Surveillance Radar (RSR)

  • Area Surveillance Radars are long-range radars
  • Used by Area Control Centre (ACC) for monitoring air routes
  • Frequency: 600 – 3000 MHz
  • Wavelength: 10 – 50 Cm
  • PRF: 250 PPS
  • Pulse Length: 2 – 4 Micro Seconds
  • Ariel Rotation Rate: 5 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)
  • Maximum Range: 200 – 300 NM

Terminal Surveillance Area Radar (TSR)

  • Terminal Surveillance Radars are medium-range radars
  • Used to maintain separation in Terminal Maintenance Area (TMA)
  • Frequency: 600 – 3000 MHz
  • Wavelength: 10 – 50 Cm
  • PRF: 500 PPS
  • Pulse Length: 1.5 – 2 Micro Seconds
  • Ariel Rotation Rate: 15 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)
  • Maximum Range: 75 – 100 NM

Aerodrome Surveillance Radar (ASR / SRE)

  • Aerodrome Surveillance Radar are called as Surveillance Radar Equipment
  • SRE are shorter range radars used by approach control
  • Provides vectors to aircraft on approach if required
  • Monitor aircraft until established on ILS Localiser
  • Frequency: 10 GHz
  • Wavelength: 10 – 50 Cm
  • PRF: 1000 – 2000 PPS
  • Pulse Length: 0.5 – 0.8 Micro Seconds
  • Ariel Rotation Rate: 30 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)
  • Maximum Range: 25 Nm (20 – 30 Nm)

Precision Approach Radar (PAR)

  • Precision Approach Radars are very short-range radars
  • Provides precision approach to aircraft on military airfields
  • PAR consists of two radars co-located to provide azimuth and elevation
  • Provides Talk Down or Continuous Instructions until touch-down
  • Frequency: 10 GHz
  • Wavelength: 10 – 50 Cm
  • PRF: More Than 1000 PPS
  • Pulse Length: 0.5 – 0.8 Micro Seconds
  • Ariel Rotation Rate: Scan a sector at 120 times per minute
  • Maximum Range: Less than 25 Nm

Airport Surface Detection Equipment

  • Airport Surface Movement Radar or Airfield Surface Movement Indicator or Aerodrome Surface Detection Equipment helps in monitoring airfields
  • Provides position of aircraft and vehicles on ground
  • ASDE has a very narrow Beam Width and providing High Resolution
  • Frequency: 15 – 17 GHz
  • Wavelength: 2 Cm
  • PRF: MORE THAN 10,000 PPS
  • Pulse Length: 0.03 (1/300) Micro Seconds
  • Ariel Rotation Rate: 60 RPM
  • Maximum Range: Less than 5 Nm

Best of luck
